Authentic English: Knowing What to Say When

Language learning involves more than just mastering grammar and pronunciation.

“Pragmatics,” which is knowing when to say what, is often not taught in the classroom. Yet in order to use language effectively, we must understand how appropriate wording varies in different social situations.

This workshop provides an introduction to how cultural differences and subtle changes in language can influence our intended meaning. Workshop participants will reflect on their own pragmatic ability by learning about common barriers to appropriate language use. They will also receive individualized feedback while responding to a wide range of typical academic and social situations. This workshop is an excellent foundation for the Pragmatics Focused Skills Series.

Topics Covered:

  • Factors that Influence Language Use
  • Pragmatic Failure
  • Softening
  • Evaluating and Applying Appropriate Language
